Modern agronomy highlights four particularly important macroelements - nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and silicon dioxide. Crops can irreversibly absorb 20-700 kg/ha of silicon dioxide per year. This amount corresponds to the amount of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium absorbed. The effect of silicon dioxide on vital activity has long been greatly underestimated, but recent discoveries have shown that it plays an important role - along with nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Since silicon dioxide is a structural soil component that greatly affects soil fertility, its constant removal leads to accelerated soil erosion. Consequently, a lack of silicon dioxide that nourishes the soil drastically reduces the natural resistance of crops, which leads to a reduction in soil productivity and an increase in the dose of chemical plant protection products, which then affects product quality.
The use of silica fertilizers and soil improvers containing silica is important in order to restore the natural balance of nutrients in the soil and plants, slow down the degradation process and achieve stable, high-quality yields. Since 2000, the production of silica fertilizers has increased by 20-30% annually. Silica is particularly important for plants, which can absorb large quantities of it. For example, cereals grown on an area of 1 hectare absorb 105-120 kg of silica from the soil, clover absorbs 20 kg, and the same amount of vegetables absorbs about 10 kg of SiO2. With all this information, it is important to stress that a plant cannot utilize 78 chemical elements if there is not enough silica in the living organism.
The silicon dioxide available in sufficient quantities in the soil promotes the uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and has an effect on the growth and metabolism of plants. The acceleration of root growth contributes to the expansion of the nutrient absorption zone and increases the drought tolerance of plants.
The growth of leaves leads to increased photosynthesis and thus to an increase in yield. Silica promotes winter hardiness of plants and increases their resistance to toxins, fungal infections, etc. The use of active silica in the soil improves the health of plants at the DNA level and increases their physiological resistance to stress. Research carried out on cereals, citrus fruits, vegetables and forage grasses has shown that with an improved supply of silica to plants, tubers and tertiary roots can grow by more than 20-100%. However, a lack of silica is one of the factors that can hinder the growth of the root system of plants. During experiments conducted on barley, sorghum, cereals and forage grass in fields and greenhouses, it was found that the amount of water required for irrigation can be reduced by 30-40% without affecting the quality and quantity of the yield by using liquid and solid agents containing silicon dioxide. The results showed that silicon dioxide can accumulate and bind water in plants by forming polysilicate acids and gels, allowing one silicon dioxide atom to retain 119 water molecules. Taking into account the consumption of silicon dioxide in the formation of the "skeleton" and protective layers in the epidermis of plants, approximately 20-30% of the absorbed silicon dioxide can be used for the formation (development) and maintenance of the plant's internal water reserves. For example, barley has an average silica content of 1.2-1.4% in terms of dry weight. With a normal silica supply, a plant with a fresh weight of 100 grams of water can also accumulate 5-35 grams. Watermelon yield increased by 30.8%, but its solids content decreased by 8%, its sucrose content by 29% and its nitrate content by 54%. Plants can absorb silica and its anions - which have smaller molecules - not only through the root system, but also through the surface of the leaves when sprayed with an aqueous solution containing silica. It is important to note that the absorption of silica through the leaves of the plant reaches about 30-40%, and through the root system, at most, 1-5%.
Increasing the natural resistance of plants to biogenic (such as fungal infections, damage caused by insects) and abiogenic (such as low temperature, drought, salt and aluminum poisoning, heavy metal pollution, etc.) stress factors is the most important function of silicon dioxide. Thus, the use of active forms of silicon dioxide offers an ecologically safe alternative to the application of plant protection products. Due to the mobile silicon compound, biochemical protection also develops in plants. The main functions of silicon dioxide are therefore to increase the resistance of plants under harmful conditions, such as thickening of the epidermal tissue (epidermis) (mechanical protection), accelerating the growth and development of the root system (physiological protection), binding of toxins (chemical protection) and providing increased biochemical stress resistance (biochemical protection).
